Indian Museum Kolkata History

The main objective of the Calcutta Asiatic Society of Bengal was to preserve the Art, Culture, geography and traditions of Bengal. Influenced by this society, the Danish botanist Nathaniel Wallich proposed to build the first museum in India in 1814. He wrote a letter to the councilor of the Asiatic Society to establish this museum. He suggested in the letter that the museum will be divided into two sections - one for Anthropology, Archeology, Technology and the other for Geology and zoology. In response to his letter, the curator of the Asiatic Society sent a team of volunteers for his services. Seeing the report, the councilor agrees and the museum was built. From 1815, Wallich began preserving the museum. Which is known to us today as the oldest and largest Indian museum in India.
