Dakshineswar Kali Temple History
There is a little story behind the establishment of this Dakshineswara Kali temple. It is heard that Rani Rashmani was a philanthropist, she was engrossed in the worship of Kalima. In 1847, he prepared to go on a pilgrimage in about twenty-four boats to give worship to the Divine Mother of the holy Hindu city of Kashi. On the night before the pilgrimage, Rani Rashmani dreamed that Kalima appeared as a goddess in Divine Mother and she spoke to Kalima. Kalima told him, "There is no need to come to Benares. You place my idol in a temple on the banks of the river Ganges and arrange my worship there. I myself will appear in the idol and receive worship."
Goddess Bhavatarini
Rani Rashmani immediately bought 30,000 acres of land in the village of Dakhineshwar and started the work of setting up a huge temple. After the completion of the temple work, the idol of Sri Sri Jagadishwari Mahakali was officially installed on 31 May 1855 along with the Chief Priest Ravi Kumar Chattopadhyay on the day of the Snana Yatra. Another form of Kalima is known to us as Goddess Bhavatarini.
Dakshineswar Kali Temple Architecture
In just eight years from 1847 to 1855, Rani Rasmoni built a three-story south-facing Navaratna or nine-spire temple on a high platform with stairs from the ground.
