Kalighat Kali Temple is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in India. It is also known as Mahatirtva Kalighat or Hindu Temple. The temple is located at Kalighat, a popular city in Kolkata, West Bengal. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of Sati Mata. I came to know from the local Kalima devotee that the right toe of Dakshinayani Sati Mata fell here about 200 years ago. That is the origin of this temple. This mother's seat is known as Dakshin Kalika and Bhairab Nakulesh. At present the temple is divided into six sections like Shoshti Tala, Natmandir, Jor Bangla, Harkath Tala, Radha-Krishna Temple and Kundupukur. Every day a lot of devotees come from abroad to worship at the feet of the Kalima. However, on any date (Poyla Boishakh, Snana Yatra, Durga Puja and Kali Puja) or Saturday and Tuesday, the number of devotees doubles.

Kalighat Kali Temple History

It is known from the Pandavas who worshiped Kalima that In Kalikund Lake, the fossil of the right toe of Sati Mata is get by Padmavati Devi, who is the mother of Laxmikant Roy Chowdhury. She placed the fossil of the finger in the temple. From this the name of Kalighat temple started. In the 15th century this original temple was like a small hut. Later in 1809, Laxmikant Roy Chowdhury, son of Shivdas Roy Chowdhury, Savarna Zamindar of Barisha, built the temple on his 595 bighas of land at a cost of thirty thousand rupees (₹ 30,000).

The present Dakshina Kali idol is a replica of Bhubaneswari Mata, the goddess of the Savarna Roychowdhury family, built in 1550 AD. This idol was made by two saints Brahmananda Giri and Atmaram Giri. It is heard that the name of the city of Kolkata is also derived from the word Kalighat.
